THE UNITED METHODIST MISSION IN HONDURAS
In general we hold to the thought of John Wesley in "The World is our Parish."
We at he College Grove United Methodist Church have chosen to primarily target our overseas mission service in Honduras.
The United Methodist Mission Initiative in Honduras began in
earnest in 1997. Churches were formed beginning in 1998. Today there are eleven communities of faith in Tegucigalpa, Danli, Talanga, Tocoa, Yoro, and Subirana. Eight missionaries are deployed throughout the country, forming new congregations and training Honduran for leadership positions in this emerging church. Honduran collaborators have assumed leadership for five communities of faith.
Eleven communities of faith have been formed by The United Methodist Mission Initiative: 1) Tegucigalpa: Fuerzas Unidas; 2) Tegucigalpa: San José de La Vega; plus two other incipient communities; 5) Danlí; 6) Talanga; 7) Escuapa; 8) Jaguas; 9) Subirana; 10) Yoro; 11) Tocoa: La Ceibita. Weekly attendance in these locations surpasses 1,000 people. Missionaries from Puerto Rico,
Cuba, Brazil, and The United States have served or are serving in Honduras through the General Board of Global Ministries.
OUR MISSION TRIPS AND SUPPORT
Over the past five years he College Grove United Methodist Church has sent medicine, food, computers and libraries. In 2003 we sent a team representing our church. Mike Rayburn, Stephanie Walsh, Ed and Denise Coy traveled to share two libraries and God's word in the Danli area.
Located 92 kilometers from Tegucigalpa, Danlí is also known as The City of the Hills. The local church dates back to the colonial period and houses excellent examples of the sculpture and painting of past centuries. The old Municipal Hall has been converted into a museum with exhibits covering everything from the area’s pre-Columbian history to rustic artifacts from nearby colonial haciendas. Danlí is famous for its annual Corn Festival, held every August. Local residents celebrate the harvest with parades, colorful floats, art contests, rodeos, carnivals and sporting events.
